Based in East Auckland, Sketch Architecture Ltd provides architectural design services throughout greater Auckland and across urban and regional New Zealand. We specialise in delivering personalised, innovative design solutions for residential and commercial projects.
At Sketch Architecture, we do not follow a predetermined architectural style or chase passing design trends. Instead, every project is shaped by the unique requirements of our clients, the characteristics of the site, and the opportunities presented by each brief. This approach ensures that every design is distinctive, considered, and thoughtfully integrated with its environment.
Practicality is at the core of our design philosophy. Budget, buildability, and long-term value are considered from the outset, enabling us to develop efficient and cost-effective solutions without compromising design quality.
We are committed to providing exceptional service throughout every stage of a project. Clear communication and comprehensive documentation are fundamental to our process. We maintain strong working relationships with Building Consent Authorities and pride ourselves on producing detailed, well-coordinated documentation that supports an efficient and streamlined consent process.
With experience spanning more than 500 residential and commercial projects, including extensive remedial work, Sketch Architecture has established a proven reputation for delivering successful outcomes. Our portfolio includes numerous award-winning architectural designs, together with significant experience in complex remedial projects.
We are particularly recognised for our expertise in transforming dated monolithic-clad homes into contemporary, high-performing residences through carefully considered remedial design and recladding solutions. Sketch Architecture is a small, highly motivated practice founded by Tony Pilkington in 2007, following his return to New Zealand after several years working overseas.
Tony brings broad architectural experience gained both in New Zealand and internationally. Prior to establishing Sketch Architecture, he worked with leading New Zealand practices Jasmax and Archimedia, before moving to the United Kingdom. During his three years in London, Tony worked with Frederick Gibberd Partnership and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, gaining valuable experience across a diverse range of architectural and development projects.
Tony studied NZCD (Arch) at Carrington Polytechnic and Bachelor of Architecture at Unitec School of Architecture. Through ongoing professional development and experience, he remains committed to maintaining a high level of technical knowledge and delivering the best possible service and outcomes for Sketch Architecture’s clients.
Tony is supported by Tracey Pilkington, who brings a strong background in business administration together with a growing role in the design and interior aspects of the practice. Tracey manages the office systems and administration and is responsible for accounts and financial management, helping ensure the practice operates efficiently and provides a professional and responsive service to clients.
Tracey also contributes to Sketch Architecture’s interior design services, working with clients to develop considered interior concepts, material and colour selections, fixtures, finishes, and furniture schemes that complement the architectural design. Her involvement provides an integrated approach to projects, allowing the architectural and interior design elements to be considered together from an early stage through to completion.
This collaborative approach enables Sketch Architecture to provide clients with a more complete design service, from the initial architectural concept through to the detailing and interior character of the finished project.
